Historical Background of the School:

 

On May 18, 1907, Mr. Ponnaiya started the school with six students at a place called Rice Stores in the 6th mile post. The first student was Sulthan Lebba. In 1912, A small piece of land was given by S. Habib Lebba and the school was relocated to the present location (7th mile post). Mr. T.M.S. Hamid was appointed as an Assistant teacher in 1918. Mr. Ponnaiya was transferred and Janab Adam Lebai was appointed as the teacher. In 1947 Mr. George Perera was appointed as the first principal and Mr. T.S.M. Hamid officiated as head of Primary School. In the same year, English medium started.

Many students who appeared in the 1948 SSC examination were reformed. Among them S.M. Ismail, S.L.M. Raseeth, N.M.M. Ismail, A.M.A. Kapoor, Uwais Amir, A.C.M.A. Tahir, and others are notable. Further, due to a lack of space, additional land was donated by L.L.S. Mohomed, H.M. Muhaideen, Aboobakkar Lebbe, M. Jamaldeen Bahdi, A.S. Noor Muhammed Lebbe, M.C.M. Marikkar, and N.M. Abdul Razak Lebbe. In 1951 Janab  O.L.A. Azeez was appointed as the principal of the school.

In 1953 a building with 4 classrooms and two office rooms was constructed. This is the existing A hall. In 1959, H.M.M. Siddiq passed the 1st Division in the General Education Examination. Advanced-level classes have been started. The school has been upgraded to Senior School. For the first time in 1961, a student named H.M.M. Siddique went to university. In 1962 Janab A.H.S. Muhammad was appointed as the principal. Also, the Science Section started for the ordinary level. The Science Laboratory and Industrial Initiative Center was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Sirimao Bandara Nayaka.

In 1964 Janab M.H.A. Wahid was appointed as Principal. Many of the students who appeared in the G.C.E (O/L) science section developed skillfully. The school was named AZHAR MAHA VIDYALYA. In 1967 Janab S.L.M. Hanifa was appointed as principal. G.C.E (A/L) Art Section classes were conducted well. Both S.H.S. Maseena and A.H.S. Nabiza went to university. In 1970 Janab A.M.A. Kapur was appointed as principal. Two classes were started in Sinhala medium. A two-classroom building was built for that with the help of parents. Over time these classes were discontinued due to lack of sufficient teachers. In 1976, for the first time G.C.E. (A/L) Science students appeared for the exam. A student named M.H. Rahmath umma was selected for the medical department and a student named A.M.M. Faleel was selected for the engineering department. Due to the efforts of Dr. H.M. Mahroob, a Library was established with the financial assistance of the government, and the books were also obtained in large amounts. In the same year, a two-story building (F Hall) with eight classrooms was constructed. In 1978 Janab V.S.M. Zubair was appointed as principal and the school was upgraded to Central College

Before 1980, with the help of External Affairs Minister A.C.S. Hamid, a land of 2.75 acres was acquired and the present playground was constructed. A three-story building (G Hall) with 12 classrooms was also constructed at the request of A.C.S. Hamid. During his tenure, Janab V.S.M. Zubair worked on the premise that the college should not only focus on getting better results but also educate the students in all fields and make them better citizens. It is significant that the college anthem was composed by poet M.C.M. Subair during this period and continues to be sung. In July 1984 Janab M.Y.L.A. Qayyum was appointed as the principal. During his time the schools were brought under a cluster management system. Mr. M.Y.L.A. Qayyum officiated as the cluster principal of Akurana division schools. 

In 1986, on the recommendation of the then External Affairs Minister A.C.S. Hamid, an assembly hall for the college was constructed. Hardball sports were introduced. In 1992, Capt. M.E.M. Farook was appointed as Principal, and the college was upgraded to national status. In 1994, basketball was introduced. The best instructors were engaged in sports like basketball and cricket. A stadium was developed , and the pavilion was also constructed in play ground. In 1999, the college became the All-Sri Lankan Runner-up in the Hardball Cricket Tournament. A faculty hostel was built and donated by an alumnus . In 2006, the centenary celebrations were held. M.M.F. Nousania, a student of G.P.D. (S/T), secured 10 A’s in all 10 subjects. A student named S.M. Usman scored 178 marks in the Class 5 Scholarship Examination and ranked first in the Kandy district.

2007 Janab M.I. Taiyupdeen appointed as Principal. In the same year  Under 17 Students got 2nd place in the All Island Basketball Tournament.

In between 2008 and 2014 Under 19 Students All ISLAND  Basketball Tournament won 1st position. R.M.A in Education A student named Amhar scored 183 marks and bagged the Kandy district topper. An annual cricket match between Azhar National College and Madawala Madina National College was introduced and the first ever "BIG MATCH" was held. The upper floor of the teacher's hostel has been completed. A bus was donated to the school under the patronage of the Alumni Union. The wall around the school boundary was completed with the support of the Ministry of Education. The girls of classes 6 to 12 (GIRLS' SECTION) were transferred to the primary section and the girls' section was started. As per the Ministry of Education's policies, Class 1 was removed as the first step in the process of eliminating Primary. In 2012, our college was absorbed in the Government's Thousand Secondary Schools Development Programme. Construction of "Mahindodaya Technology Lab" was completed and 65 computers were provided. The work on the student hostel system has been started under the auspices of the Alumni Leaders Union. Initiation of the project for a high-quality science department under the auspices of ADF. G.C.E. (A/L) Technical course was started with 28 students.

Currently, 1,682 students are studying and 87 teachers are working here. The school offers advanced divisions in Arts, Commerce, Science, and Technology, as well as a guaranteed 13-year educational program in both Tamil bilingual medium.
